I should have learned how to categorize
If I knew back then, around 20 years ago, that I would still rely on my old recorded material, I would have archived my work more carefully. I am ploughing though stacks and stacks of tapes, tying to bring pieces of tracks together.
Unfortunately, for most tapes there is very little information available. During some earlier archiving attempts, I have been writing down some key words how to recognize the recordings. During the recovery of the Almery recording a few years ago, I managed to write down most of the information of recordings up until about 1991. And even that is not actually very reliable, as I have almost never written any date of recordings on the tapes.
Fortunately, for some of the recordings made on the Fostex 4-track recorder, some information of recording dates was noted. Information such as "Fostex Aug ’92", "Fostex Jan ’92" or "Fostex juni ’92, part 1-2-3". I have found the tape with the remarks "Fostex juni ’92, part 4" written down on it. Unfortunately, the original recording on this tape is lost. But more about that in another post.
The fun of al this browsing and ploughing though this material is the re-discovering of some recordings I hardly remember the existence of. Most of these recordings are not really worth restoring. Others are really discoveries of hidden treasures, kept on a secret place that was just waiting to be found only years and years later.
The latest treasure I have found in my archives is something I would like to share with you in a podcast, which will be posted very very soon. It’s probably something I will never release, but it would be a shame to keep it from exposure. It’s something that has been recorded somewhere between 1991 and 1992, and has been restored only a week ago.

Hoi Renxe9e, mogelijk herinner je dit niet meer, maar ik heb jou ontmoet op de KLEM-dag in Breda, 1991 was dat geloof ik. Je had een walkman bij met je laatste muziekopnames die ik ook ff mocht beluisteren. Ik herinner me jou en je muziek van het te vroeg bexebindigde radioprogramma ‘Maneuvers in het Donker’. Daaruit is ‘The Laughing Magician’ een nummer dat me het meeste is bijgebleven. Ik heb zelf nog enkele oude opnames van het programma. Mogelijk kan ik ze nog bewerken op de pc zodat ze terug tot hun recht komen,… op xe9xe9n of andere Podcast bv.
Misschien dat ik binnekort zelf enkele muziekjes vrijgeef. Thuis heb ik een Korg Legacy 1 met MS20 controller, een Electribe EA-1 en een Korgje X5. Alle gekocht van de verkoop van een Roland SH-101. Die werkte nog prima na zo’n 15 jaar in m’n bezit, maar de tijd was rijp voor een nieuwe thuis.
Ik herinner me ook dat je een ouwe synth Syrinx of Lynx had ofzo. Klonk in ieder geval fantastisch!

Ha, ik las zojuist dat je rond die periode een Elka Synthex had.
Die vond ik toen onwaarschijnlijk goed klinken. Ik geloof dat die toen al zeldzaam aan het worden was.

Hallo Mark,
Ik kan je zeker nog wel herinneren. Ik weet nog dat we hadden afgesproken bij het prikbord, maar dat we elkaar telkens misliepen.
Het was inderdaad de Elka Synthex die ik toen had. De track “The Laughing Magician” was bijna geheel met deze synth gemaakt. Helaas behoort deze niet meer tot mijn colleectie.
Ik heb net een nieuwe podcast uitzending geplaatst. Ik hoop dat je het leuk vind.
